An Interesting Police 👮‍♀️ Report

September 1928

A handwritten report:

From: Ptl. Thomas J. O’Donnell # 3263.

3 Pct

To: Comm. Officer 3 Pct.

Subject: Shooting of man while making arrest for felonious assault and carrying loaded fire arm.

At 2:35A.M. while on patrol duty in the 3rd Pct. and at Duane Street and Park Row I heard a pistol shot on Park Row, looked in that direction and saw two men running across Park Row from No. 117 crossing street from East to West side. The first man was about 25 feet ahead of the second man who was later identified as John Fox. The latter had a revolver in his right hand and did point and discharge same at the first man, firing three more shots at him. The man continued running through Park Row toward Pearl Street and disappeared, and who’s identity has not been established.

I ran through Park Row on west side of street in the meantime drawing my service revolver and approached to within 15 feet of John Fox when he turned around facing toward me and pointed the revolver at me. I ordered him to drop the gun which he failed to do but continued pointing same in my direction. I stepped behind elevated railroad pillar and ordered him twice more to drop the gun, which he did not obey or answer. He advanced a step in my direction, so I aimed my revolver at him and fired one shot, the bullet taking effect in his right arm. He still held on to the revolver and after a couple of seconds shouted you got me.  I then stepped from behind the pillar and ran toward the man and took the revolver out of his right hand and placed him under arrest at this time. Ptl Joseph Jurin 3rd Pct. and Pct. Lawrence Nelson 3rd Pct. arrived on scene.

Brought the prisoner to 3rd Pct. accompanied by Ptl Jurin and he identified himself as John Fox 35 Cherry Street 26 yrs.Single U.S. White. Ambulance summoned from Beekman Street Hospital and Fox was removed there and attended by Doctor Kramer who pronounced him suffering ....( when I find the rest of the report I will add it to this Blog Entry)
